Programmes

Boarding at Hereworth is not simply living away from home. It is a way of life, an exciting challenge and an experience that will remain as a positive influence for years to come. The boys thrive in the structured environment and with an increasing variety of internal and external activities on offer, it is little wonder that boarding is a popular cornerstone of Hereworth life.

Weekends offer a less structured programme for the full-time boarders with the boys enjoying the many facilities within Hereworth. These include, tennis, swimming, cricket, table tennis, pool, biking, computers, woodwork and cooking. The most popular activities are those the boys organise themselves with the ever-popular Hereworth ball tag being furious fun.  A feature of 2008 has been the introduction of the now famous, mud slide - truly designed for boys.

Another feature of the weekend programme is the organised trips outside school to such places as, go-carts, golf, ten-pin bowling and paint ball. The hot pools at Ocean Spa in Napier are a popular destination in the summer. As a senior privilege, the year 8 full-boarders, after passing a course on cycle safety run by the Police, are allowed out in the local area on their bikes.

Life as a boarder is a unique experience. At Hereworth it is designed that way.

Dayboy Boarding Experience

Rationale:  The boarding experience is unique. Boarding school research reports that "boarding is an education in and of itself". While a little corny, the phrase is true - living in a boarding environment leads to learning that is just as (or more) valuable than the education you get strictly in a classroom. Following consultation with families during 2009 there was very strong support (in fact almost unanimous) for the concept of every boy experiencing the boarding environment for a period of time during their final two years at Hereworth (i.e. Years 7 and 8). We believe education takes on a broader meaning when the boarding element is included and boys will have a greater understanding of the boarding element of our school culture (boarding is one of our school ‘corner stones').
