Our First Grandparents’ Day for 2023 – A special time for our Year 7 and 8 students

It was a pleasure to be able to welcome close to 150 grandparents, uncles, aunties and other significant friends to Hereworth today. Some came from nearby, whilst others had travelled a great distance for this special occasion.

Grandparents play such an important role in the lives of our boys and girls. Much of this is seen through the support and help they provide to parents. Grandchildren find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them in their development.

Grandparents are great role models and mentors for the younger generation. They are also historians and teachers – guiding values, instilling ethnic heritage, passing on family traditions and offering unconditional love. They will often also reveal secrets about their own children when they were young, which will be noted by the grandchildren!

And of course in return, being a grandparent, is one of life’s greatest blessings: “Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged.” Proverbs 17:6.

The expressions on the faces of our intermediate students as they welcomed their grandparents at the carpark outside Wiremu indicated how much enjoyment they received from having them come to their School for the morning.

All the boys and girls were excited to have their grandparents visit their classrooms, share in Chapel together, take them on a tour of our facilities, and give them a better understanding of their School. It was an uplifting occasion helping to foster stronger connections both between and within the families at Hereworth – a most special day for all concerned.

We look forward to having a similar occasion later in the year for students in Years 0 to 6.

WINTER SPORTS - Term Two

Please read the Sports Summaries below before making the selection for your son/daughter.

  • Winter Sport is not compulsory for Years 1-3 students. If your Year 1-3 son/daughter will not be playing a winter sport, please don’t fill out the form.
  • Students from Years 4-8 must select one winter sport.

If we cannot provide a Hereworth team in your child's chosen sport or grade, students can be released to play for a local club.

We are planning to field teams across four different sports for the upcoming winter season.  We have surveyed all of our primary classes and are aware that a number of students are hoping to play each sport.

RUGBY (Year 6-8)
We will enter teams in three different grades:

  • 10th Grade (U11s)
  • 11th Grade (U12s)
  • 12th Grade (U13s)

Please note: the names and weight restrictions of these grades have changed since last season. The grades will now be called U11s, U12s and U13s.

The official weigh in will be at Hereworth on Monday 3 April.

Games will be played on Saturday mornings at various grounds throughout Hawke's Bay.

FOOTBALL (Year 1-8)
We are hoping to have the numbers to field teams across a range of grades. Unfortunately, we will not have the numbers to field any teams in girl only grades.

Central Football have made it compulsory for girls to play ‘Girls Only Football’ up to and including 10th Grade.

This means that most girls, Year 5 and below would have to play for a local club.  From 11th Grade up, girls can be mixed in with the boys; however local clubs are able to field teams in ‘Girls Only’ grades up to Under 14’s.

Central football has informed us that most girls are choosing to play in girls only teams. Girls (Year 6-8) can choose whether they will play for a ‘Girls Only’ club team or for a Hereworth mixed team.

Games will be played on Saturday mornings at various grounds throughout Hawke's Bay.

HOCKEY (Year 4-8)
Again we are hoping to field teams in both Primary and Intermediate grades.

  • Year 4 students wanting to play hockey would join in with our Year 5-6 students.

  • Intermediate games are played midweek (Tuesday or Friday evenings, dependent on the grade).

  • Primary grades are usually played on Saturday mornings.

NETBALL (Year 5-8)
The Year 5-6 Netball grades play on Thursday afternoons at M10 Sports Park in Hastings.  Games are 6 v 6 (2xA, 2xD, 2xC).

Year 7-8 Netball is played on Wednesday afternoons or evenings at M10 Sports Park in Hastings. Games are 7 a side.

  • Friday 24 March at 3.30pm which is straight after assembly

Please join us for this AGM in the Founders' Room, followed by an informal, social gathering including light refreshments to start the weekend.

If you would like to be involved in the School, the Hereworth Parents Association is a wonderful way to join in. Through our various activities, we build relationships within the school and throughout the community, while also helping provide additional amenities and equipment to the students.

The purchase of the EPro8 science kits and the laser cutter have all been funded through recent HPA events. This year, there is even more opportunity to be involved as we farewell our Chair and Treasurer, Tim Gillespie. Consequently, we are seeking volunteers to take on these roles, so if you are interested in being a part of the HPA in one of these positions, please email me at hpa@hereworth.school.nz.

Kind regards
Sarah Brandeburg
Secretary - HPA
