Mazbou Q Performance and our Primary School Concert – An amazing showcase!

Last Tuesday afternoon all staff and boys had the pleasure of witnessing the work produced by boys in Years 7 and 8 who had been working with rap artist Mazbou Q for two days. As Mazbou Q talked about the process involved with the boys to produce their own songs, I was struck by the parallels of what is important in education – getting the boys to work with something that has real meaning for them and working as part of a team. It was a great showcase of what these boys could do from an initial idea. This exercise enabled them to learn to find their own voice, engage their mind, emotions, and body in ways that allowed them to move through real-life situations communicating with increasing empathy, compassion, understanding, emotional intelligence, confidence and resilience. The boys’ personal songs left the audience inspired and wanting more.

These performances were followed by the combined Year 0 to 6 Performance Concert. This showcased not only the extensive range of singing, voice and musical opportunities on offer at Hereworth, but, once again, the depth of talent and skill possessed by our boys. It was marvellous to see so many of our boys taking part in this afternoon.

Thank you to Mazbou Q, our many tutors and, in particular Mrs Joanne Stevens, for all the time and effort given to assist with the preparation of these events both before and on the afternoon.

Congratulations to the many boys who put so much into making the afternoon such a success. All involved can feel very proud of the standard of musical performance displayed. You gave us all a great deal of pleasure – it was a wonderful concert.

Mr. Neil McCorkell - Time to Stop Sawing and Sharpen the Saw

Mr Neil McCorkell wishes to take a year off from his teaching role at Hereworth for all of 2022. He will spend a large part of this leave examining other schools, so it will be a time for him to gain refreshment and reinvigoration, a time for forward thinking, planning and ideas gathering.

There is a lovely story by Stephen Covey about the importance of taking a break:

Suppose you were to come upon someone in the woods working feverishly to saw down a tree.

“What are you doing?” you ask.

“Can’t you see?” comes the impatient reply. “I’m sawing down this tree.”

“You look exhausted”, you exclaim.

“How long have you been at it?”

“Over five hours”, he returns, “and I’m beat. This is hard work.”

“Well why don’t you take a break for a few minutes and sharpen your saw?” you enquire. “I’m sure it would cut a lot faster.”

“I don’t have time to sharpen the saw”, the man says emphatically. “I’m too busy sawing!”

(From Seven habits of highly effective people, 1989)

We all need time to stop sawing and sharpen our saws – a time for reflection, exercise, silence, thinking, resting, praying and sleeping. It is through these things we add value and meaning to our lives.

I am sure you join with me in wishing Mr. McCorkell all the very best as he has this period of time away from Hereworth prior to his return in 2023.

40HR FAMINE
Hereworth is once again fundraising for The World Vision 40hr famine, which begins tonight at 8.00pm through to Sunday 12.00pm Hopefully, students that want to take part have signed up on the website, by searching for the Hereworth profile on the World Vision website. https://my.worldvision.org.nz/ss/kS8ohZ/hereworth-school

By completing the 40hr famine we are reminded that we are incredibly privileged. It will also give us a sense of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in sub-Sahara Africa. The boys can ask their friends and whanau to sponsor them through donating to their efforts on the world vison website.

THURSDAY 1 JULY
Additionally, the boys can also take part in fundraising for the 40hr Famine next Thursday during an extended lunch period as part of a normal school day. Students are invited to think of activities they can offer to fundraise for World Vision. Some suggestions I've already had are:

  • Guess how many lollies in the jar
  • Wet sponge throw
  • Conversion kick competition

We would advise boys to bring small change to take part in the fundraising activities. If you have any questions about the 40hr Famine, please email David Wilson at chaplain@hereworth.school.nz There will be no on charge - cash only.

The Te Mata Peak Trust has an opportunity for boys to fulfill this criteria. Te Mata Park is seeking volunteers to assist them with exciting revegetation projects this winter. There are many volunteer opportunities in the coming months which involve planting and caring for native trees, enhancing biodiversity, and growing the beauty of Te Mata Park. All of our events are enjoyable, full of enthusiastic people, and include morning tea at the minimum. Click the following link to see all the upcoming events. >>>Te Mata Park
