Improving our lives by helping others: Reflecting our motto of "Non Nobis Solum"

Over the course of these past two weeks, our boys have been raising funds for World Vision through the 40-hour famine to help those in other parts of the world in need. We have a strong relationship with this organisation. Yesterday some 50 boys organised their own stalls with their friends for a Market Day in support of this most worthy cause. Over the course of some 45 minutes at the end of lunch, these 50 boys ran their stalls whilst others moved around having fun participating in competitions, many involving throwing or kicking balls, racing cars, or eating lollies, sausages, donuts or popcorn. The boys raised close to $1500 over that short amount of time – an amazing achievement.

Activities such as this, where we are doing things in support of others, are one of the best ways to make us feel happy. It also has a positive effect on our health and approach to life. It allows us to learn how other people are experiencing life, how they are feeling and to develop empathy for them and then to determine how to assist them.

Philosophers have known the benefits of such actions for centuries. "No one can live happily who has regard for themselves alone and transforms everything into a question of their own benefit," wrote the first-century Stoic philosopher Seneca. And in practically every religious tradition and practice, giving of oneself is a key step on the path to spiritual fulfilment. The great scientist Albert Einstein commented, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”. In 1 Peter 3:8 it says “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble”. Our School motto: “Non Nobis Solum – Not for Ourselves Alone” reflects the importance of doing good things for others.

Modern science has determined what happens in our bodies when we have empathy, compassion and a desire to give back to others. It causes the release of a hormone called oxytocin. Higher levels of oxytocin are associated with the ability to connect socially. Essentially, giving back is a miracle drug (with no side effects) for health and well-being. Studies have found that people whose happiness was based on service to others had far better health profiles. Our bodies' internal system is subtly pushing us to give to others.

People who give back are more likely to assist their classmates, more committed to their work and less likely to quit under pressure.

So there’s a need to connect, find our hard-wired need for empathy and service to help others and live a happier life. Through the efforts of Mr Wilson, staff, parents and boys we are encouraging one another to give back to others. We’ll all be better off for it!

Years 7 & 8 School Concert – Another amazing showcase!

Congratulations to all boys involved in the Concert last Tuesday. The variety and quality of performances was amazing – some that had deep personal meaning for individual boys.

We were all amazed at the talent and skill displayed. The performances gave us all a great deal of pleasure.

Thank you to our many tutors and, in particular Mrs Joanne Stevens, for all the time and effort given to assist with the preparation of this event both before and on the afternoon.

Thank You - End of Term Two 2021

At the end of another very busy term, I sincerely thank all staff for their enthusiastic and steadfast dedication to their important work of educating the minds and hearts of our young boys.

I especially wish to thank parents for your support of the School and for working together with staff in the best interests of your sons. Thank you also to the large number of you who have provided support to staff at school activities. This is very much appreciated.

Thank you to our boys for your efforts, your support, your friendliness, your talents and responsiveness. You do enrich the School by your commitment, your involvement and your presence. You give purpose to all that we do.

I wish all boys, Old Boys, Board members, staff, parents and their families a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday period.

I look forward to welcoming community members back at the start of next term when we will once again see our boys involved in the rich and varied educational and extracurricular life of Hereworth.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
As part of applying for Citizenship Colours, boys need to complete some Community Service - put our school motto into practise! The Te Mata Peak Trust has an opportunity for boys to fulfill this criteria. Te Mata Park is seeking volunteers to assist them with exciting revegetation projects this winter. There are many volunteer opportunities in the coming months which involve planting and caring for native trees, enhancing biodiversity, and growing the beauty of Te Mata Park. All of our events are enjoyable, full of enthusiastic people, and include morning tea at the minimum. Click the following link to see all the upcoming events. >>>Te Mata Park

40hr FAMINE MARKET DAY - HIGHLIGHTS

40HR FAMINE - MARKET DAY FUNDRAISER
A massive thank you to everyone who took part in the market to raise money for World Vision yesterday. It is incredibly humbling and overwhelming to see such support especially from parents who provided money,  food and equipment for the days activities.
We look to have raised just over $2400 with some monies still to come in. What a fantastic effort boys - this will make a massive difference. Thank you to our Hereworth community for your generosity.

Some amazing baked treats that the boys were queuing for!

  • How many jelly beans do you think there are?

  • Testing his steady hand with the wire buzzer - Love the concentration!
  • Everything is all under control in the Sausage Sizzle stall. Nice Job!
  • More opportunity for guessing the number of sweets in different size lollie jars!
