Over the course of these past two weeks, our boys have been raising funds for World Vision through the 40-hour famine to help those in other parts of the world in need. We have a strong relationship with this organisation. Yesterday some 50 boys organised their own stalls with their friends for a Market Day in support of this most worthy cause. Over the course of some 45 minutes at the end of lunch, these 50 boys ran their stalls whilst others moved around having fun participating in competitions, many involving throwing or kicking balls, racing cars, or eating lollies, sausages, donuts or popcorn. The boys raised close to $1500 over that short amount of time – an amazing achievement.
Activities such as this, where we are doing things in support of others, are one of the best ways to make us feel happy. It also has a positive effect on our health and approach to life. It allows us to learn how other people are experiencing life, how they are feeling and to develop empathy for them and then to determine how to assist them.
Philosophers have known the benefits of such actions for centuries. "No one can live happily who has regard for themselves alone and transforms everything into a question of their own benefit," wrote the first-century Stoic philosopher Seneca. And in practically every religious tradition and practice, giving of oneself is a key step on the path to spiritual fulfilment. The great scientist Albert Einstein commented, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”. In 1 Peter 3:8 it says “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble”. Our School motto: “Non Nobis Solum – Not for Ourselves Alone” reflects the importance of doing good things for others.
Modern science has determined what happens in our bodies when we have empathy, compassion and a desire to give back to others. It causes the release of a hormone called oxytocin. Higher levels of oxytocin are associated with the ability to connect socially. Essentially, giving back is a miracle drug (with no side effects) for health and well-being. Studies have found that people whose happiness was based on service to others had far better health profiles. Our bodies' internal system is subtly pushing us to give to others.
People who give back are more likely to assist their classmates, more committed to their work and less likely to quit under pressure.
So there’s a need to connect, find our hard-wired need for empathy and service to help others and live a happier life. Through the efforts of Mr Wilson, staff, parents and boys we are encouraging one another to give back to others. We’ll all be better off for it!
Years 7 & 8 School Concert – Another amazing showcase!
Congratulations to all boys involved in the Concert last Tuesday. The variety and quality of performances was amazing – some that had deep personal meaning for individual boys.
We were all amazed at the talent and skill displayed. The performances gave us all a great deal of pleasure.
Thank you to our many tutors and, in particular Mrs Joanne Stevens, for all the time and effort given to assist with the preparation of this event both before and on the afternoon.
