Welcome Back – Perseverance Through Challenges

It has been great to welcome boys back this week. Hereworth is very different when they are away. They make the School come alive.

At our first term three Chapel Service on Monday, I said to the boys that I want it to be another important term of learning for each of them. And to that end, I framed that by offering some advice as to how best to enjoy it – and be the successful learners I know our boys all aspire to be.

Over the holidays I read an article about a baby learning to walk. It falls, on average, 743 times before making those few magic steps that cause the parents to yelp with joy, which causes the baby to fall down! But then the baby gets up, and tries all over again. And once he or she has learned to walk, he or she then begins the process of learning how to run – which causes the baby to fall repeatedly all over again. There's a pattern here which is indicative of learning - a series of challenges or setbacks, separated by plateaus. Each time you master a challenge or setback, you start a new round of learning.

Imagine, if you will, if this Year 8 student at camp last year had thought, “I'm not even going to try to climb to the top until I know I can do it.” Nothing would happen and he wouldn’t overcome this challenge. There would be no progression because he wouldn't try; he wouldn't learn to persevere to realise his potential.

So my bit of advice to the boys this term is to urge them to do their best and be continually open to the learning that comes their way. Often to progress in learning it's absolutely necessary to fall down a few times or have some setbacks or failures. But keep going, don’t give up, give it your best all the time.

I wish you all the best for another wonderful term.
