As always, I want this to be another special term for our boys. And to that end, I have offered them some advice so they can make the most of the weeks ahead:
To keep going and do their best to master challenges or conquer setbacks. Like the example used last week of a baby learning to walk – they get up when they fall over and try again. Often to progress in learning it's absolutely necessary to fall down a few times or have some setbacks or failures. It is important to persevere.
Take time to reflect; take time to “smell the roses”, is the phrase often used. Great ideas sometimes come out of the blue – but often only after a time of contemplation and deep, measured thought. In our society, we are urged to press forward, frantically to search and source and connect and stay current. There is very rarely time afforded or scheduled for reflection – a contemplation of what we have just discovered. Our boys need to savour their learning; to revel in the creation of new ideas, and immerse themselves fully in the wisdom of the past. For deep learning to happen, it is important to pause and reflect rather than to press on relentlessly.
(As you can see from the picture above, Class 1-3TP have been embracing the practice of Mindfulness!)
My final piece of advice has nothing to do with learning, but everything to do with our boys’ health and happiness. They are going to do a lot of great things this term. However, there is something equally as important as the things they do or the things they learn. How they treat people trumps everything. People matter. So above all else, our boys are encouraged to build their connections – not the virtual ones, but the real ones. The number of people “Friending” them on Facebook won't be nearly as important to their growth and well-being as their teachers, teammates, classmates – and especially their own family – those people we share real face-time with on a regular basis. Give everyone a chance to be a friend. Value the people you respect, trust and love and similarly show respect, trust and love to others. It will be their source of strength. Hereworth is a place where our boys do make friends for life. It is one of the many gifts afforded to them at this great school.
Welcome to our New Boarding House Staff Member
Last weekend, Miss Teri Pryce commenced her role as one of our Weekend Boarding House Assistants. She will be working Saturday and Sunday mornings. She replaces Miss Maddison Smith who departed at the end of last term.
Miss Pryce is a local girl. She currently works at Hastings Girls’ High School in their Learning Support Department. She studied Psychology and Linguistics majors at the University of Victoria and University of Hawaii. Since has worked as an environmental analyst and as a media analyst prior to taking up a short term English teaching position at Ishikawa Gijuku Junior High School in Fukushima Prefecture in Japan last year. Miss Pryce returned to Hawke’s Bay in May 2021.
A warm welcome to Miss Pryce as she commences her time at Hereworth.

COMMUNICATION DURING SCHOOL HOURS
A reminder to all parents that if boys wish to contact their parents during the school day, this must be through their teacher or via the school office.
Boys are not permitted to email their parents or use cell phones to call them. If they are found to have done so there will be a punishment as a consequence.
As per the Student Code of Conduct: 'All mobile phones need to be handed to classroom teachers upon arrival to school and collected at the end of the day.'
Similarly, if parents need to get a message to their son, this should come through the office or the classroom teacher also.
