If you want your child to have the best chance to accelerate their mathematics, reading and writing skills, then our small class sizes and differentiated teaching will ensure your child will be in a position to do just that.

No matter if your child is struggling with their current results, or achieving high marks across the board, at Hereworth we have the tools, the teachers and the experience to ensure your child is given every opportunity to learn and grow.

Smaller class sizes. Incredible teachers

Children should be seen and heard

If your child is getting lost in the shuffle, Hereworth is where they’ll be seen. Smaller class sizes have been a fundamental part of a Hereworth education for almost a century, and we’ve seen the results that come from having fewer students per classroom, and a more focused environment.

Even as our School continues to grow, we’ll keep our class sizes small, so that your child receives the care and attention they need to flourish.

Our amazing teaching staff may have decades of experience, but they’re always looking to improve and innovate. That’s why all of our teaching staff take personal development days throughout the year, ensuring Hereworth’s teaching standards remain at the cutting edge of education.

Structured Literacy

Literally excellent

We want to give your child every opportunity to succeed in literacy and set them up with foundational reading and writing tools for life.

That’s why we implement a Structured Literacy program from Year 1 so your child is engaged and educated no matter their year group. This systematic, evidence-based teaching offers students the highest possibility to succeed.

While the New Zealand Government will be making structured literacy compulsory for all schools from 2025 onward, their policy will only be for Years 0 – 3. Whereas at Hereworth, we will continue to teach it for all Year Groups from 0 – 8, giving your child the best chance to rapidly improve their literacy skills and setting them up for life, no matter what year they are in.

Specialist Teachers

As your child grows, so do the opportunities. At Year 7 and Year 8 all of our students are taught writing by a specialist teacher, allowing their competency and creativity to flourish. These separate writing lessons puts an emphasis on the written word, ensuring your child is surrounded by techniques that will make them literally shine.

Opportunities to grow and expand

Short story and essay writing competitions are also available for your child to enter throughout the year. We understand the value of the written word at Hereworth, and soon so will your child.

Streaming Maths

Numbers that make a difference

At Hereworth, we have Streamed Maths classes from Year 4 onward. This puts children into groups based on their mathematical ability, allowing your child an opportunity to grow and flourish in a class that suits their level. They’ll be comfortable and engaged, but also challenged and encouraged to grow.

Using traditional teaching methods, we'll ensure that your child will receives a solid foundation in mathemetics, empowering them to excel in this critical subject.

Learning Support at Hereworth

Helping and supporting children who need it

The Learning Support teachers at Hereworth School are committed to supporting children who face challenges in their learning by offering support through small group sessions, whole-class teaching and supporting classroom teachers.

The Learning Support sessions are run in small groups during class literacy time. Children get two 25-minute Learning Support sessions per week. The Hereworth Literacy Learning Support follows a Structured Literacy model and is taught by a team, including a teacher and a teacher aide.

Additionally, for children in Year 5-8, who are not necessarily behind in their literacy, but have gaps in spelling, reading fluency, and/ or grammar, a class is offered to fill these gaps. The focus of the class is to give children an additional boost in literacy skills in a small, focused setting.

Children with learning challenges in maths are supported through class streaming and small class size. Additionally, the lowest streamed primary class also has a teacher aide working alongside the children each day to ensure low teacher-to-student ratios.
