13 August 2020 - Coronavirus Update 11 - Boarding Families

Hello Boarding Parents.

I hope this finds you safe and well.

Just a quick couple of messages from the Boarding House to ensure you are all up to date with current happenings.

COVID – TRACKING PROCEDURE

With the recent and sudden change back to Level 2 and the fluid nature of these changes it is timely to remind those in the boarding environment of the Hereworth procedures in place. Whilst there is no major change at the moment some simple processes come back in place.

If you enter the Boarding House please enter your details via one of the following options

  • The COVID 19 NZ app by scanning the barcode situated at the entrances.
  • Enter your details into the contact tracing form provided in the stairwell.
  • Where possible during drop off and pick up remain in your vehicle so your son can come out to meet you.

Tuck

Just a friendly reminder of what is appropriate and not appropriate in tuck for the boys in the best interests of their health. The boarding manual states the following.

2.9  Tuck

2.9.1 - Tuck Time takes place at 7:15 pm every day under the conditions outlined in the Boarding A-Z document. Tuck should be packaging-free and consumed in reasonable amounts at a single sitting.

Currently, we are having items consisting of – Boxes of cereal, packets of cream doughnuts, packets of chip and bags of lollies. This sugar spike of high glycaemic food approximately 45min before bed time is causing a large amount of very hyper boys which disrupts those who are settling for bed.

There is also a number of students giving cash to Y8 boys to go to the supermarket/dairy on their town leave to purchase bags of lollies on their behalf. There is no need for students to be given cash to bring in to the boarding house but we understand on occasion those who remain in over the weekend may have a small amount of spending money.

Home baking, fruit and other low glycaemic foods will help longer periods of sustained energy and reduce the feeling of being hungry or a ‘sugar crash’. This is a process that will continue to be monitored and adjusted until a suitable solution is found.

Weekends

At the request of the kitchen can you please communicate with your son their weekend meal requirements by Wednesday morning or alternatively email the boarding house by Wednesday evening. I will then collate that information on a Wednesday night to be relayed to the kitchen and matrons to provide them with the time they require to prepare for the weekend.

Contact Hours and Pick Up

Please note that our boarding staff work tirelessly to ensure the continued safe daily operation of the boarding house. To assist the following communication guidelines may help.

  • General communication via the boarding phone. 8am – 8pm Monday – Friday. Outside of these hour's communication should be via email.
  • General communication via the boarding email. The boarding house email will be cleared periodically through the day. If you require your son to leave the school grounds during the day then contact is via the office who will communicate this with their teacher. For leave outside of the school day communication is via the boarding house.
  • Emergency – Outside of the hours above the boarding house phone is contactable for an emergency.
  • Weekends – Throughout the weekend both Maddison and Renee our weekend matrons are available via the boarding house phone from 7am – 9pm.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off your son through the week please do this by 7:45pm. This includes Friday pick-ups for the weekend.

Please note that outside of these hours there may be a delay in getting back to you.

The boys have been starting to get back in to a good routine since the start of Term Three and seem a lot more settled, we appreciate your help in this.

Thank you

Scott and Anita McLaren
