Co-curricular Sport
Participation in co-curricular sport is compulsory for students in Years 4 – 8 and optional for those in Years 0 to 3.
In Term Four this year, our Director of Sports, Mr Scott Jensen, will contact all families with full details of the all the options available for Term One summer sports. Information on winter sports options will be send via the Hero app in Term One, 2026.
Year 4 – 8
Students will choose one summer and one winter sport and are required to play for Hereworth if there is a team or grade available at their level.

Co-curricular Sport
All students (Year 4-8) are required to participate in one of the following Hereworth School organised summer sports programmes.
Cricket
Placement in a team will depend on the numbers wanting to play. Cricket is played on Saturday mornings at various schools and club grounds throughout Hawke's Bay.
Initial cricket teams are formed based on age and ability. Please note that the 1st Club trials (Year 7/8) on Tuesday 30 January are for students with significant cricketing experience who possess the skills to play in the Intermediate Division One competition. Further trials will be held in week one of School. There may also be some movement between cricket teams during the season.
Softball
Hereworth softball teams usually play in the Hawke's Bay Under 13 and Under 11 grades. The entry of teams depends on the number of students wanting to play.
Most games are played on Saturday mornings at Akina Park in Hastings, but occasionally Hereworth softball teams will be granted a home game.
Tennis
Tennis players will be part of a Tuesday or Friday night Interclub team representing Hereworth. This is dependent on ability as players need to be able to serve and continue a rally.
Interclub starts at 4.00pm on Tuesday and Friday evenings and is played at various clubs and schools throughout Hawke's Bay (Intermediate A on Tuesdays, other grades on Fridays)
If numbers exceed capacity, students will be encouraged to try a different sport. They will also have the option to register separately for Morning Squads, Hot Shots and Private Lessons.
Year 7-8 tennis students will have sports practice available from 3:15- 4:15 pm on Monday and Wednesday each week. Attendance will be optional for day students but compulsory for boarders who play tennis. Those who do not attend practice are required to go home at 3:00pm and ideally take up other opportunities to work on their tennis skills (see Private Coaching Options below).
Thursday Practice (3:15-4:15 pm): Compulsory practice for the Top 16 players on the Hereworth Tennis Ladder.
Weekends: The Hereworth courts are available for students and parents to share some court time and work on their tennis skills.
Private Coaching Options: Janine Perkinson, our Head Tennis Coach, will be offering a variety of coaching options for all Hereworth students (including those who do not play tennis as their chosen school sport). If you are interested in any of the below options (charges apply), simply contact Janine at: janineperkinson@gmail.com or mobile 027 475 9543. Click HERE for more information
If there are any other queries regarding tennis at Hereworth, please contact Mrs Kate Field.
Group and Private Lessons
Monday and Wednesday- 4.15pm onwards – Limited availability
All ages and abilities, we will try to organise the groups so that they are of similar age and ability. Price will depend on the number of students per group.
Morning Squads
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday- 7:15-8:15 am
Suitable for established players who have had coaching before and are starting to compete. Players will already be able to serve and keep a rally going. Morning Squads are a great environment for the successful development of players.
Interclub tennis is also available to students who play another summer sport at Hereworth, and who possess a minimum level of ability.
Water Polo
Important: There is unlikely to be a Hereworth staff member available to coach Water Polo so team entry will be dependent upon parent transport (for boarders) and parent supervision at games. Please let the Director of Sport know if you can help in this area. If we do not have parent volunteers, we will be unable to enter teams.
Priority is given to those who select Water Polo as their first option, those who were in the team the previous season and older students.
Water Polo is a relatively new addition to the Hereworth sports programme. We enter a maximum of two teams in the Year 7-8 grade. There are only a small number of places available. Games are held at the Aquatic Centre in Hastings on Thursday evenings. Although it is not a requirement, being a strong swimmer is an advantage.
Water Polo may be ideal as a second option as some students may also play another sport. If a student selects Water Polo as their first option, they will not have practice on Monday and Wednesday and will be required to go home at 3:00pm. Hawke’s Bay Water Polo will be running their Intermediate Programme for Term 1, 2 and 3. Initially, we will just be entering for Term 1.
The Aquatic Centre occasionally provides coaching opportunities during the week where they invite students to use the pool and work on Water Polo skills. Information regarding training sessions will be forwarded to parents when it comes to hand.
Adventure Sport
Places are limited due to safety considerations and the capacity of the school mountain bike trailer.
Those who choose Adventure Sport need to have a high level of fitness or be determined to work hard and develop their personal fitness levels. The mountain biking and running often involves challenging, steep terrain.
On Mondays the Adventure Sport group is usually focused on general fitness, running and swimming. Activities may include duathlons, circuits, trail and hill running, and orienteering. Wednesdays usually involve mountain biking which may be based at school or involve local parks and trails.
Students are required to have their own mountain bike and have this regularly serviced to ensure it is in good and safe working order. They will also need all the necessary protective and safety equipment. This group will have some Saturday morning activities.
Selecting a Summer Sport - please complete as soon as possible
Please click the button below to make the summer sports selection for your child. A separate form will need to be completed for each child. We would appreciate this being done as soon as possible so that we can continue planning for 2026 Sport.
Sports Practices
Sports practices will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15pm until 4:15pm.
In Week 1, sports practice and trials will be on Wednesday and Thursday (31 January and 1 February) to give us extra time for trialing. The purpose of trialing is to help us place students in the correct grade for their ability. Please note, sometimes this is a challenging task and we may need to make changes as the season progresses.
In Week 2, there will be no sports practice because of the Waitangi Day public holiday and the students departing on camp. Students should be picked up from school on Monday, 5 February at 3.00pm.
From Week 3, sports practice will resume at the standard Monday and Wednesday practice times and students who are in a Hereworth team will be expected to attend these two practice sessions.
Some teams will also train on Thursday from 3.15pm-4.15pm and our coaches will let these students know once teams have been selected.
Please note: in special circumstances, an exemption can be granted through the Director of Sport.
