Event FAQs

Where is Te Aratipi Station and how do I get there?

Te Aratipi Station is tucked away at the top of the Maraetōtara Valley — around 30 minutes from Havelock North and 45 minutes from Napier.

Parking will be at 895 Okaihau Road, past the woolshed, with volunteers there to welcome and guide you in.

What time does the walk start?

Please arrive from 10.00am for a 10.30am walk departure.

Do I need to register in advance?

Yes please. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and registrations close Wednesday 3 June to help us with final numbers and catering.

How long is the walk?

The main walk is approximately 8km and graded easy. The walk follows a mix of farm tracks, rolling paddocks, limestone areas and bush trails. Some sections may be uneven, muddy or slippery depending on weather conditions, so please take care and wear appropriate footwear.

Is the walk suitable for children and families?

Yes! This walk is graded easy and designed to suit a wide range of ages and fitness levels. There will be plenty of children doing the walk and there will be treats handed out along the way to keep them going.

What should I bring?

Good walking footwear is essential. Please also bring:

● Layers for changing weather

● A large drink bottle

● A hat and sunscreen

We are quite elevated, so it can feel cooler than town. You can find our full walking checklist here: Te Aratipi Walk Information

Are there refreshments available? Yes. Your ticket includes lunch of:

● A Matangi sausage sizzle

● Home baking

● Fresh fruit

● Tea and filter coffee

Water refill stations will also be available.

If you’re after an espresso coffee beforehand, we recommend stopping at your favourite café en route — or perhaps Red Bridge Coffee.

Do I need to bring anything to sit on for the picnic after the walk?

If you would like to bring your own picnic rug or camping chair, you are very welcome to. We will also have plenty of picnic rugs and seating set up on the lawn for everyone to relax and enjoy after the walk.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately not — we are sorry. As this is a working farm with livestock, and parts of the walk pass through protected QEII covenant bush areas where dogs are prohibited, dogs are not permitted on the walk.

Will there be toilets available?

Yes. There will be portaloos available at the start and finish area, along with a long drop toilet partway around the walk.

Is there parking available?

Yes — there will be plenty of paddock parking available at 895 Okaihau Road, with volunteers onsite to guide you.

What happens if the weather is bad?

This event will go ahead in most weather conditions. However, if severe weather or safety concerns arise, the event may be cancelled. Any cancellation decision will be made by midday Friday and communicated to all ticket holders.

Regarding weather, Te Aratipi Station follow 2 apps - YR (search Te Aratipi) and Windy FYI.

Food & dietaries

As this is a community fundraiser with simple catering, we may not be able to cater for all dietary requirements. But we will have gluten free bread available at the sausage sizzle and all baking will be nut free. We recommend bringing any additional snacks or specific food items you may need.

Who is the event open to?

This walk is open to the Hereworth School community — including current and past students, siblings, parents, grandparents and extended family.

What happens if I hurt myself or need assistance during the walk?

We will have volunteer first aiders onsite with kits positioned at the beginning, middle and end of the walk. Our Can-Am vehicle will also be circulating throughout the day to check on walkers and assist if needed.

As with any outdoor farm activity, participants attend at their own risk and should take personal responsibility for their safety and wellbeing.

Do I need to sign a Risk Disclosure?

By purchasing a ticket and attending this event, participants acknowledge that farm walks involve natural hazards including uneven ground, mud, livestock, changing weather and slippery surfaces.

Participants agree to:

● Follow all instructions from organisers and volunteers

● Stay within designated tracks and areas

● Wear appropriate footwear and clothing

● Take reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others

Parents and caregivers remain responsible for children attending with them.

If conditions become unsafe, organisers reserve the right to alter, delay or cancel the event.

Who do I contact if I have questions?
