Welcome to Boarding at Hereworth - a safe, comfortable 55-bed boarding facility located in the heart of our school, for boys and girls in Years 5 to 8. A place where lifelong friendships are made, opportunities are everywhere, and your child will learn and grow in an environment that will help lay the foundations for the rest of their lives.
The confidence, the camaraderie, the independence and the sense of purpose - these are characteristics we love to see in all of our Hereworth students, but we see them absolutely blossom among our boarding students.
So if you're interested in boarding for your son or daughter in 2027 and beyond, please read below to learn how Boarding at Hereworth can be the ultimate advantage for your child.
New arrivals
Boarding has been an essential part of the Hereworth experience for 100 years, and we are excited to announce that we’ll be offering boarding to our Hereworth Girls in Years 5 to 8 from June 2026.
Our brand new Girls’ Boarding Wing will be a purpose-built private area, creating a contemporary, comfortable environment for our trailblazing boarding girls to enjoy. This one dorm, five-bed facility will sit within the main hostel footprint, while remaining a strictly private zone.
We're thrilled to announce all five beds were snapped up within days of this announcement in Term Two, showing a real enthusiasm for having girls boarding at our School. Thankfully, we will have places available for girls in 2027 and beyond, so if your daughter is interested in being among the first-ever trailblazing girls to join our Girls' Boarding Wing, please click below to find out more information.
Boarding gates are now open
Hereworth has three options to suit every boarding family. No matter if you live in Auckland and want your child to experience life in the Bay, or if you live locally and need a few days while you're away on business, we will ensure your child has the exact amount of time, care and attention in our Boarding House.
FULL TIME – Perfect for the family who lives outside of Hawke’s Bay, Full-Time boarding gives your child full accommodation in the Boarding House at Hereworth. They’ll be looked after during the weekends, and continue to hang with their boarding friends while under supervision.
FIVE DAY – A hugely popular option, this gives families the best of both worlds – the convenience of having your child stay at the Boarding House all week, before they head home in the weekend. Five Day boarders leave Friday afternoon, and return Sunday night or Monday morning.
CASUAL – Need a bed for a day, a week, or a month? Then casual boarding is for you, giving you the exact amount of days you need for your child.
Casual boarders will receive the same catering, bedding and experiences our full-time boarders will, so you're never missing out.
We have families from all over New Zealand who chose to boarding with us. From Auckland to Taihape, Waipukurau to Taradale, our team will ensure that your child is happy, welcomed and stable from the very first day they walk through the door.
The 'closer to home' trend
One trend we’ve seen in recent years is the increase in families who live only 10 to 20 minutes away now choosing to send their children to board at Hereworth. This provides the best of both worlds -
No bleak winter drop offs – Getting all the kids into the car at 7.15am can be a chore, but with your child boarding at Hereworth, those midwinter drop-offs are a thing of the past.
Close by – Your child is ‘just down the road’, and contactable immediately, but still gets the independence and boarding lifestyle they require.
All the benefits – All the homework, cooking, laundry and activities are taken care of at the Boarding House during the week, so you see your child unabated during the weekend. Or as one mother put it – “We get them for all the good parts, and I don’t have to be the grumpy parent!”

This is your captain speaking
We could not have a better person to lead our Boarding House than the current Boarding Director, Mr Ian Scott. Ian has been with Hereworth for over 30 years, and his care for each student, combined with a principled nature and supportive character, make him an outstanding leader for Hereworth’s Boarding community.
Ian is supremely passionate about boarding and sees the House as the heart of the school. One conversation with Ian will give you some true insights into how beneficial boarding can be for these students.
Joining Ian to oversee our new Girls' Boarding Wing will be his wife, Sherryl Scott. This husband-and-wife team brings years of boarding and educational experience with a warm, family-centric approach to pastoral care and wellbeing, making them the perfect tandem to lead our Hereworth boarding into its co-ed future.
Our Boarding House carers reside onsite in the boarding house, so our students know exactly who to contact in any given situation. And with the boarding residence being at the heart of the school, all of our Hereworth staff and tutors regularly spend time getting to know our boarders to help them settle in and progress.
ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES TO BE A CHILD
Imagine having 22 hectares of beautiful grounds to explore in? To play, adventure, and be a ‘child’ in? With no smartphones, no devices, just endless opportunities to grow in? That is Hereworth School, after the school bell rings, to our boarders.
With near endless sports fields, a mountain bike track, tennis courts, a new Sports Centre and plenty of trees to climb, our grounds become the ultimate playground for our students.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Let’s not forget this is a school, with all the academic opportunities it brings. Our students are here to learn, grow and develop as young people, and our boarders integrate perfectly with our school days. If any of our boarders want to catch up on studies or take a moment to brush up on their classroom speeches, having the library, classrooms and facilities right next door is an incredible advantage.
FULLY CATERED FOR
No need to do the laundry, as our professional team ensure your child’s clothing and bedding is returned to their dormitory, giving you one less chore to complete. It also helps to have a full catering team on-site led by an Italian Chef, meaning that our Boarders are fed delicious, healthy meals from breakfast to dinner.
