One of the things we love about boarding is that everything is done at the school. Our sons come home on a Friday, head back to school on a Monday, and in that time my husband and I get the very best of them. 

The growth we’ve seen in both of our boys has been huge, not just academically but personally as well. Boarding at Hereworth has taught them to become more responsible, where they’ve learned to managed their time and themselves, which is very important in a boarding environment. 

Living in Central Hawkes Bay, we found that boarding provides our boys with a range of opportunities they wouldn’t necessarily get back in CHB. Not only is it academic but it’s also sporting, cultural, extra-curricular activities and more. The strong friendships they’ve made will be for life, and boarding has taught them to be respectful and tolerant of others. They have their friends, but they also have a close bond with everyone in the boarding house.

They’ll hit the farm, go out hunting, enjoy the weekend and then head back to this safe, welcoming school environment. Prep is also sorted and it gets completed, which is amazing! It means I’m not the nagging mum at home and get to enjoy the very best of them over the weekend. 

I love how the school has a family feel to it. The staff really understand your child, but also how to help them thrive in the boarding environment. We feel really connected to Hereworth and the Boarding House is its heart. That’s really special and important to us. We feel connects and specially connected to the Boarding parents. 

If you’re considering boarding for your child, what I would say is that yes, it is a big decision, but for us it is the best decision we’ve made for not only our children but also for us as a family. I would encourage you to talk to families, other parents, the school and the kids, and you’ll really understand how boarding works, how it supports students and families.
